HANCOCK, MI – Cathy Azzarello, MD, has joined the team of Pediatric providers at Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center (UGL) in Hancock.
Dr. Azzarello is a board-certified pediatri- cian and neonatologist new to Hancock, MI. She has been a practicing clinician since she completed her schooling in 1998. Dr. Azzarello received her Bachelor of Science Degrees in Chemistry and Biology from Eure- ka College in Eureka, IL. She then completed medical school at the Medical College of Wis- consin in Milwaukee, WI, in 1992, her pedi- atric residency training at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in 1995, and her fellowship training in neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, in 1998.
As a native of Wisconsin, she found her way back when she moved to Neenah, WI, in 2008
where she worked with premature and com- plex newborns. Her clinical focus is the care of chronic childhood medical conditions. As a neonatologist and pediatrician, she has cared for many children with complex and rare dis- orders. She enjoys having a relationship with the family and understanding subtle changes in the child’s status as it can make a huge dif- ference for their well-being. Dr. Azzarello is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pedi- atrics (AAP) and has participated in advocat- ing for children through the AAP. Her profes- sional interest is identifying disparities in receiving health care and advocating for food insecure families. “The reduction of health- care disparities is a very complex responsibil- ity but taking steps at a local level is a way we can all participate,” says Azzarello, “Reducing the burden of food insecurity for families pro- vides improved nutrition, but also relieves the hard choices some parents need to make for their families.”
Dr. Azzarello is married to Joe Azzarello who is an environmental engineer, a native to Grand Haven, and a graduate of Michigan Tech. Joe showed Dr. Cathy the Keweenaw Peninsula and they decided to relocate to this beautiful area. Together, they have 3 dogs named Chivo, Gus, and Tesla as well as 2 yel- low nape Amazon parrots named Otis and Petra. The Azzarello’s are avid gardeners, bee keepers, and enjoy hiking and snowshoeing.
