Rapid River Hardware Is A Community Staple
By Jordan Beck
RAPID RIVER — The business now
known as Rapid River Hardware has been a community staple for decades, and its current owners have been working to improve it over the past several years. Lori Berg, who co- owns the business along with her husband Jim Berg, said it has been present in the commu- nity since the 1950s. “It was originally a Gambles store,” she said. Lori and Jim took over about five
and a half years ago. “The store was up for sale, so we felt we should invest in our com- munity,” Lori said.
The Bergs have worked on many improve- ments to Rapid River Hardware’s building in their time as the business’ owners — includ- ing the
conversion of what was once a garage for use as additional retail space. Renovations to this space were officially completed this sum- mer.
Other improvements made to Rapid River Hardware under the Bergs’ ownership have
included the addition of a bathroom, a full ren- ovation of the building, electrical work and new shelving. Lori’s friend Cathy Sjoquist designed anew logo for the business, as well.
Lori said her store offers “everything hard- ware,” including building supplies, paint and plumbing supplies. It also sells some other products, such as hunting supplies and hand- painted Polish pottery. “We just have a big variety of things for a small space,” she said.
People interested in saving time while shop- ping locally can also take advantage of a serv- ice that was introduced recently at Rapid River Hardware.
“We have online ordering through the Do it Best website,”Lori said. Orders made through this service can be delivered to Rapid River Hardware free of charge. The store also pro- vides rentals of wood splitters and Rug Doc- tors, as well as laundry pick-up and drop-off services in cooperation with Escanaba Steam Laundry & Dry Cleaners.
Looking forward, Lori said she and Jim are planning to keep doing what they have been doing with their business. “To try to keep
expanding and keep providing what the com- munity wants and needs,” she said of the store’s goals for the future.
Rapid River Hardware is interested in intro- ducing new equipment rental options, as well. “We’d like to expand that,” Lori said. Addi- tionally, Lori thanked people in the commu- nity for making Rapid River Hardware’s con-
tinued success possible.
“They have been awesome — totally sup-
portive,” she said. For more information, find “Rapid River Hardware” on Facebook.
