NEW YORK — Small business owners are upbeat about their companies’ prospects even as they have a harder time getting bank loans.
That’s the finding of a second-quarter survey of owners by researchers at Pepperdine Univer- sity’s Graziadio Business School and Dun & Bradstreet Corp.
Small business owners expect their annual rev- enue to rise 10.2%, a
more upbeat view than
the 9% they forecast in
the first quarter; over
the previous 12
months, these compa-
nies had an average
4.5% revenue gain.
Mid-size companies
forecast a 7.3% gain,
down slightly from
7.5%; their revenue rose 7.7% on average in the past 12 months.
The researchers considered small businesses to be those with under $5 million in revenue. Mid- sized businesses are those with between $5 mil- lion and $100 million in revenue.
The results are in line with other surveys in recent months; owners are optimistic about their companies even if credit is harder to get or the economic looks to be weaker. Many owners have faith in their own ability to help their companies’ growth rather than government officials or banks.
Small business owners are optimistic in spite of the fact they’re having a harder time getting loans. Sixty percent said it was difficult to get debt financing, a considerable increase from 52% in the previous survey. Mid-size businesses
also found it harder to get loans: a third said it was difficult versus 17%in the first quarter.
Bank loans are harder to get, not surprising given that interest rates have been rising in response to the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes that have been put on hold for the time being. Among small businesses, 31.6% said they were successful getting bank loans, down sharply from 43.9% in the first quarter. It was also more difficult for mid-size companies, with just under
89% reporting suc- cess, down from 94.7%.
The difficulty in getting bank loans was also reflected in the fact they weren’t the most sought- after form of financing during the past three
months, after having been No. 1 for years. Busi- ness credit cards were most popular among all businesses who wanted financing, pursued by 52.8% of the companies. Bank loans were in sec- ond place, sought by 45.4%, with personal cred- it cards in third at 43.2%. But going forward, of the businesses that expect to seek financing in the next six months, 70% said they will likely seek bank loans.
The survey conducted between mid-April and mid-May questioned 848 companies in Dun & Bradstreet’s database. The company compiles credit reports on companies.

ESCANABA, MI— May 2019 — DS Tech, a leading managed technology services provider (MTSP), announced today that the company now offers SD-WAN-as-a-Service to their small to mid-sized business (SMB) customers. SD- WAN is a leading technology and according to research firm Gartner, “by the end of 2019, 30% of enterprises will deploy SD-WAN technology in their branches.” The reason for the technolo- gy’s rise in popularity is due to its simultaneous capacities to increase productivity within an organization while also reducing the total cost of ownership.
To define the term, SD-WAN is an acronym for software-defined networking in a wide area network (WAN). SD-WAN simplifies the man- agement and operation of a WAN by separating the networking hardware from its control mech- anism. This concept is similar to how software- defined networking implements virtualization technology to improve data center management and opera- tion. A key application of SD-WAN is to allow companies to build higher-performance WANs using lower-cost and commercially available Internet access, enabling businesses to partially or wholly replace more expensive pri- vate WAN connection technologies such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). SMBs that need to scale up or scale down quick- ly, or need to run multiple remote offices or would like greater visibility into their networks can benefit greatly from this technology.
“The organizations that we work with are
always looking for these kinds of break- throughs,” stated Eric Wakkuri, President of DS Tech. “SD-WAN enables an unprecedented level of flexibility and in today’s volatile market- place, the ability to scale up or down is simply a must-have.”
DS Tech is also a Member of Technology Assurance Group (TAG), an organization of managed technology services providers, who collectively deliver over $350M of products/ser- vices to the marketplace. TAG operates in 136 cities and serves over 400,000 customers, which affords them access to best practices and knowl- edge for deploying SD-WAN effectively and efficiently. They also leverage their collective buying power to offer better pricing to end- users.
“Business owners just want their technology to work,” added Wakkuri. “SD-WAN is the best way for us to help all of the underlying technol- ogy within in an organization work even better. We’re very excited about offering SD-WAN-as- a-Service because it enables us to help companies be flexible and nimble when they have to respond to today’s extremely fast-paced environ- ment. The marketplace now demands mobility, rapid scaling or descaling capabilities and impenetrable security, and SD-WAN is the per- fect fit.”
